Fatigue, but do not try at Murrayfield tussle23: 01 13/03/2010, Paul Rees, the England rugby team, the minutes of the match, the Scotland rugby team, Six Nations rugby, sport, the Observer, Guardian Unlimited
England 15-15 Scotland
Fatigue has come before the turmoil of England since winning the World Cup seven years ago and all I can say about this impasse warm tryless from their perspective was that it was an improvement in their two previous visits to Murrayfield.
They have fought to have been more abject than they were in 2006 and 2008, the parties again in the cross which remained trylines, but at least now are trying to play and not just being treated.
Scotland also had a go, ranging from the 22 own after 11 minutes but if the will was there, the capacity was not proportional and the result was a match that started very brightly faded with the sunset in the dark the ball leaving the breakdown, scrum and the breakdown of weak arbitrage.
England played at the bar all the first four minutes of the second half without Jonny Wilkinson, who was helped from the field after hitting his head against the ground after trying to deal with Max Evans. The fly half seemed drunk as a strategy to attack England this season, and his replacement, Toby Flood, brought a measure of order and organization to a back division that was too amorphous, Wilkinson will be sorely missed at the end , as England found themselves in a familiar position when the clock ticked down, rolling in for a triple.
Flood, who kicked two penalties after the three approaches, giving England the lead on both occasions, had a 45-meter penalty with two minutes after the replacement hooker Scott Lawson was negligent Scragged Danny Care, and drop its goal attempt in the closing seconds was accused by Nick de Luca.
Lawson was relieved as lack of flood filling landed on his left foot and in the afternoon when players were more than willing to test the tolerance threshold, which proved to be too high, the referee, Marius Jonker, especially in the breakdown, the His was the most crass of a series of senseless crimes. Given the way the game started with both sides trying to move the ball in his own field, a yellow card earlier to kill the ball on the break could have served as an accelerator of play which is desperately needed.
Instead, Jonker contented with warnings. Steve Borthwick as England captain, received three players after they had killed the ball in a ruck and was ordered to listen to as Dylan Hartley received a conference to launch a punch at Ross Ford, when the first two rows square after a scrum collapse.
Jonker was as responsible as the two sides to the game both on the lack of brightness. If the first half of the season saw a surplus of kicks from the hand because teams were afraid to take the ball in contact with attacking teams run by officials of the distribution, the goal has now become defenders and the equipment can no longer use the referee as an excuse for the failure of the company.
Likewise, referees should be raised for players who deliberately killing the ball, although quite why the two groups of strikers saw the need to be so cynical nor looking back division threat had some explaining to do. Both sides deserved yellow cards, but England were the most cynical, obviously because they had more to do defense. Skillfully shared around the faults, Lewis Moody escape a card for his failure at the top had arrived only seconds after James Haskell was replaced, but the cumulative effect was to slow the game down to a crawl.
If neither the coach was satisfied with a draw, Scotland Andy Robinson seemed to burst into a smile that his opposite number, Martin Johnson, although the draw means your team will collect the wooden spoon to beat unless Ireland in Dublin on Saturday. However, for possession of all his strength, Scotland, threatened to score a try when Dan Parks just cut to the line or cross-kicks. They struggled to create a space with ball in hand, but are a more rounded team in Robinson.
England made a more openings and had moved towards greater mobility for five probably, quite possibly, have taken at least one of their opportunities. Scotland are played regularly through eight, nine or 10 stages, while England struggled to go beyond four and lost again the account turnover, this time 5-0. Until we put more emphasis on rhythm in the last row, you struggle to finish what they start.
Johnson, for once in time tactical substitutions. Wilkinson had just left when Ben Foden came during Delon Armitage, who turned to look indecisive. Within five minutes, England had a scrum-half when wing Ugo Monye replaces Ben Youngs, who suffered a clash of heads with Kelly Brown was taken to hospital for x-rays after leaving the field on a stretcher.
Within minutes of England, boldness vanished in the family wear. They were followed by 9-6 in the interval: Parks kicked two penalties often were each tied by Wilkinson dropped a goal before. Wilkinson's last act was to put a penalty, but after the flood had twice given England the lead, Parks began the scoring with two penalties and hit a pole with two others. The woodwork saved England, but only if your attack strategy would work.
